First Day of our Last Week at Lycée Saint Marc by Conor Forry (Monday, 3 June)
08h00-10h00
Me and the boys attended different classes in the morning at Lycée Saint Marc. I personally went to Chinese class where we made traditional necklaces. I found it incredible that most of the French students take English and Chinese (or Spanish) simultaneously.
10h00
Left for the Fourvière Basilica after class, didn’t take us long to get there and we started walking.
Here’s a picture of us walking.
We made it to the train station which takes us up to the top of the Fourviere Hill.
- We took the funicular which is a tram way.
- The tunnel into the hill was pretty long and surprisingly hot which was a welcoming relief as it got cold quick.
- Here is the lunch we were all given for the pique-nique (pick nick).
● We made it to the top of Fourviere, and it did not take long. Maybe like a 20 min travel time from the school.
● We began a tour of the Fourviere Basilica and our tour guide was really nice. He turned out to have gone on the same exchange trip with Bchigh and Lycee Saint Marc sixty years ago!
Fourviere Facts
● Full name is Basilica Notre Dame of Fourviere.
● It gets its name Fourviere because of its ancient Roman background.
○ Exactly where the basilica is now is where a Roman forum was when Lyon was a Roman City.
○ Forum Vêtus is Latin for (Old Forum) - Fourviere naturally comes from this coined ancient landmark.
● The outside was built to look like a castle/fortress whilst the inside a gold prestigious throne room.
● A part of Fourviere was built to commemorate The Virgin Mary after the Bubonic Plague had been vanquished in France in 1643.
● The main basilica was built on top of old Roman foundations and started in 1872 and finished in just twelve years in 1884.
● Me and Wyatt Averett checking out the ceiling of one of the outdoor patios.
● Above is the bell tower (rings very loud)
● Super meticulous
● I think these columns take inspiration from the Roman history that was here before, super cool.
● Here we climbed a huge spiral staircase, (I wanted to take a picture of the entire thing by sticking my phone out the railing but I’m scared of heights)
● Made it to the top of the tower, on a clear day you can even see Mont Blanc from here, unfortunate for us not very clear.
○ But just as magnificent.
● The tour lasted like one hour and we finished!
● Here is a group photo right outside the Basilica.
● I’m closing my eyes in the photo like a doofus.
● After tour we had snack break and restroom time at this beautiful spot.
● The pigeons here were bananas.
● Beautiful view of the Cathedral of Lyon.
● Everyone finished their snack and now it was time for another tour in Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon).
● Old Lyon dates back to the 9th century.
14h00
● Our legendary tour guide aka the vice principal of Lycee Saint Marc.
● He knew everything about Old Lyon.
● Thomas, Wyatt, Ryan, Olivier looking up.
● What everyone was looking at, Beautiful.
● This cobblestone road was all throughout Lyon, reminding everyone of Beacon Hill
back home.

● To end the tour we explored this sick corridors inside of the buildings that led to ancient courtyards with medieval wells and wow it was so cool.
● After the tour ended we had around two hours of free time in the city!
● I went with Christopher Murphy, Charlie Hamblet and Olivier Trevor.
● Us desperately looking for a place to eat.
● Charlie took charge and found us a stellar cafe with a delicious Strawberry Cheesecake. Thank you, Charlie.
17h00
● We returned to Lycee Saint Marc and most of us went home, others?… to the Taylor Swift concert
