Our Trip Home by Wyatt Hartford (Friday, 7 June)

Image
It was unfortunately our last day in France, and time for the trip home. As a group, we all arrived at La Place Bellecour at 7:00 a.m. in order to take our bus to the airport. With heavy hearts to leave our exchange families, but excitement to see our own again, we said our final goodbyes to our friends in Lyon. Surprisingly, the bus ride to the airport was not as loud as one would expect. Usually, whenever a group of high school students get the opportunity to board a bus, they take it as their chance to goof off and laugh with each other, usually louder than the chaperones would like. This  bus ride however, was uncharacteristically quiet. It seemed as though all the students were spent from their two weeks in Lyon, and perhaps sad as they began to realize that their time in France  was coming to an end. As the bus drove on, we all began to point out the places we recognized, and the places we’d been, saying goodbye to them as we drove to the airport. We passed shops we’d al...

Last Day of Classes at Lycée Saint Marc - Lyon by Andrew "Drew" MacDonald (Thursday, 6 June)

Today was our last day in Lyon, France, and it was a very good one. We started our day as normal, with classes from 8:00 AM to noon, the longest block of classes which we have had on the trip. As it is approaching the end of the school year for the students at Lycée Saint Marc, the classes were very fun. In my case, I passed a class period by doing karaoke with the people in the class, along with Wyatt Averett.  After noon, our classes ended, and we were lucky to have the afternoon free to enjoy the city of Lyon. It was a great opportunity to pick up last minute souvenirs, see things we missed during the weeks (though we didn’t miss much), and spend some time with our correspondents and friends before the trip ended.  Lastly, at 5:00 PM, we had our Pot de Depart, where we had our final meeting with all of our friends and teachers, and reflected on our amazing time in Lyon, France.  We will meet early tomorrow at La Place Bellecour to return home, ending our amazing experi...

A Very Hot day in Lyon - Lycée Saint Marc - Adventure to the Musée Gallo Romain in Vienne including a fun workshop activity - by Thomas Lewis-Bowen (Wednesday, 5 June)

This morning I woke up at around 7:00. Shortly after waking up I felt terrible, not ill, but suuupperr tired. Strange, the night before I had gone to bed at reasonable time, 10:30, right after having a delicious meal, Quenelle with Béchamel, made by my very nice host family. Once I finally got up, I got ready for the day. Upon making myself breakfast my hosting student Louise told me we would be late if we didn’t leave now, so, I skipped breakfast and headed straight out the door to Lycée Saint Marc.   Once at Lycée Saint Marc, it was nice that the BC High boys and I did not have any classes in the morning and instead we collected our pique-nique baskets just outside the atrium. Everyone had about an hour to chat with one another and with Madam McGrath and Madam Kupsc about our activities after school the day before. We then had to depart to Perrache Station. Once we got to Perrache Station we took a commuter train to Vienne just around a half hour outside Lyon.  Above: A fron...

German Class at Lycée Saint Marc, Lugdunum and City Visit - Lyon - by Alex Hayes (Tuesday, 4 June)

Image
I started my day off with a two hour long German class from 8:00-10:00. Though it was challenging to follow along in class, I did find it interesting how many students take at least two modern languages, one of which is English. During German class, we watched parts of a film that was in German and then the students would discuss what it was about.  After German class, our group headed out for the day to Lugdunum where we saw an ancient Roman amphitheater and the museum about Lugdunum and the Romans. Lugdunum is at the top of a big hill that overlooks Lyon and the surrounding area which allowed some nice views.  Once we were finished in Lugdunum, we then headed back to the high school for lunch. After we finished lunch, we had time to ourselves from 12:30 or so until 5:00. I went out into the city with friends Drew and Wyatt to go shopping and see the great city of Lyon.

First Day of our Last Week at Lycée Saint Marc by Conor Forry (Monday, 3 June)

08h00-10h00 Me and the boys attended different classes in the morning at Lycée Saint Marc. I personally went to Chinese class where we made traditional necklaces. I found it incredible that most of the French students take English and Chinese (or Spanish) simultaneously. 10h00 Left for the Fourvière Basilica after class, didn’t take us long to get there and we started walking. Here’s a picture of us walking. We made it to the train station which takes us up to the top of the Fourviere Hill. We took the funicular which is a tram way. The tunnel into the hill was pretty long and surprisingly hot which was a welcoming relief as it got cold quick. Here is the lunch we were all given for the pique-nique (pick nick). ●       We made it to the top of Fourviere, and it did not take long. Maybe like a 20 min travel time from the school. ●       We began a tour of the Fourviere Basilica and our tour guide was really nice. He turned out to...
