First Day of Classes at Lycée Saint Marc - Lyon by Jonathan Olson (Monday, 27 May)

Today was our first day of school with our French correspondents in Lyon. My day started off by grabbing breakfast and taking the train with my correspondent Paul to get to school at 8 o’clock. It took us around 20 minutes to get there, but I heard from others that it took them longer. It was fun to create comparisons between the trains in Boston and the trains in Lyon. My takeaways were that the stations themselves were much cleaner and well kept, the trains were much faster than the trains we take as Bostonians each day, and the trains ran without a conductor.

Once we got to our stop which was La Place Bellecour, we met up with some friends that we had not yet seen since we arrived at the airport, and started our walk to school. The walk itself was not long as the station was just a couple of streets away. When we got to the school, I noticed how big the entrance was. It was quite shocking to me. We entered the school and were brought into a room where we were given a presentation of the schedule, activities during the school week, and when we would shadow our correspondents.

Afterwards, we were given a tour of the school starting with the courtyard where they have recess to the different sections of classrooms. They mentioned how Lycée Saint-Marc is more condensed compared to our campus in Dorchester. We continued to walk around the school until it was twelve, then we went to the cafeteria for lunch. If I had to compare their cafeteria to one in the United States, it would be the cafe in the furniture store IKEA with so many options to choose from and a similar line up to see the cashier. For lunch they had anything from salads and pasta to donuts and other treats. After eating we spent some time outside enjoying the weather and collaborating with other students.

As soon as it was time, we headed to the chapel where we were to do activities to learn about the different murals. Their chapel was considerably bigger than the one at BC High, one could mistake it as a full church with a grand altar and pews that went to as far as the eye can see. The activity I enjoyed the most was when we sang a song together named, “Donne-Moi Seulement de T’aimer” or “Just Let Me Love You”.

Immediately after, we meet at the Atrium–our meeting point for when we travel as a group– to go and visit the museum of film and miniatures. It was fun to see replicas and actual objects that we used in the movies we all know and love like Jurassic Park, Top Gun, and many others. When we got back to the school, we had a little snack as we talked about our experiences in Lyon so far and our takeaways.

Finally, we finished the school day and met up with our correspondents and walked around La Place Bellecour. This is the recap of our first day at Lycée Saint-Marc.
